Playback Control Beyond the Lock Screen

2026.03.13Technical Log#product-ui#content#playback

Aligned the lock screen, mini player, and app entry to maintain consistent playback state across all surfaces.

Playback controls must remain consistent after the app moves to the background. When the lock screen's remote controls and Now Playing metadata diverge from the actual playback state, the reliability of the listening experience degrades directly. This work addressed the alignment of lock screen remote controls, Now Playing, and the persistent mini player at the bottom of the screen so that all surfaces reference the same playback state.

The scope extended beyond any single screen to cover the key transition points users move through: initial app entry and onboarding, scene transitions between content, and the audio effects pipeline including reverb. Each of these paths was brought into alignment with a consistent standard. The objective was not to add features in isolation, but to ensure a coherent, uninterrupted flow from entry through continued use.

Content display logic was unified under the same principle. When moment and inst content, recommendations, and search results each follow different visibility rules, the experience reads as inconsistent across screens. Standardizing display logic ensures that regardless of entry point, content is presented with the same rules and the same voice.
